2016 Japan Trip Fundraiser

Immerse yourself in Rural Japan
A small group, 10-day exploration
of culture and spirituality
18-28 October 2016
Kunisaki Peninsula, Kyushu, Hiroshima, Kyoto
A Japan you never imagined!
This experience is in support of
Petersgate Counselling Centre, Christchurch

This experience is designed to enable people from a western tradition to engage with another ancient culture. With the host’s many contacts, participants will visit places and meet people inaccessible to tourists.

The group leaves Christchurch on 18 October 2016 and returns on 28 October. Group size is limited to 10.

Homestay four nights with a Japanese family in Kitsuki town, eat a variety of authentic Japanese food, meet the local people, and visit extraordinary gardens!

Walk Samurai streets and visit castles and houses of the Samurai era. Enjoy a tea shop and tea ceremony crafted by the owner, who is the ninth generation on the same site. Explore Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. Stay a night at a temple and experience Zazen meditation with a Buddhist priest.

Discover shitake mushroom growing and travel by Shinkansen (high-speed bullet train) to Hiroshima and Kyoto where you’ll explore these historic places.

In-Japan costs are $4,000 (NZ $) per person.
This covers all accommodation, all meals, all entry to temples, and all internal transport within Japan. The only extras are your drinks with meals, and the gifts you buy to bring home! You have paid for it all, now enjoy the ride!

Air fares are over and above this amount. The experience begins in Fukuoka on the morning of 18 October 2016. You need to make your air bookings to enable you to be there at that time. We finish in Kyoto, and usually fly home from Osaka. We do not arrange group travel, but Rob can suggest his Travel Agent if you wish.

You may want to stay on in Japan and visit other places or you may wish to arrive in Japan ahead of time, in which case Rob can make suggestions for you.

On your indication of interest a full itinerary will be forwarded to you,
with more detailed information.

A deposit of $500 NZ is payable by 1 June 2016. This will ensure you are included. Note that places are limited and will be allocated to the first 10 to place deposits. If the trip fails to have the needed minimum number and is cancelled, your deposit will be refunded in full. If you withdraw after 30 September your deposit is not refundable.

Balance is to be paid by 1 September 2016.

Jo Tomooka, our host and translator, has lived in rural Kyushu for 19 years. Married to Masahiro, mother of Emily and Masaki, Jo lives in the small town of Yamaga, about a 2-hour drive from Fukuoka, the major city of Kyushu. Jo runs an organic farm, and is known throughout the area as a collector of local customs relating to food and family life, often recording these as they disappear. Fluent in Japanese language, Jo will be with us each day, and is organising the home stays for the group.

Rob Ferguson, retired minister of St Ninians Presbyterian Church, in Christchurch, has traveled to all the sites we visit and will escort the group along with Jo. Jo and Rob have organised several groups together.
